Since the very first national spelling bee in 1925, the Bee has canceled just three times — 1943, 1944, and 1945 — due to World War II. As the Bee’s leaders were then, we are dedicated to being good stewards of our program while acknowledging that the world is navigating unprecedented circumstances. The health and safety of the spellers, their families, our officials, Scripps staff and so many others are our greatest concern and priority when it comes to decisions about the national finals for 2020.
